    Ventile Pile Jacket

Posted by Kevin Hodgson on 15th Nov 2020

Firstly, this jacket is totally waterproof. OK, so taking delivery of this jacket in a very warm and dry April has meant waiting a long time for the opportunity to test it fully. But after several short trips out in heavy rain I decided to give it a definitive test today on an awful Sunday in the middle of November.
I've always been a huge fan a fibre pile clothing and you very rarely need to wear a waterproof over a standard Pertex/Pile jacket because of the way it constantly draws moisture towards the outside of the jacket. However, wearing pile pertex during a downpour is not a sophisticated experience, the cuffs, elbows and hood can get quite wet. Warm, but still pretty damp. So, for a long time I've been very interested in the possible combination of two 'almost waterproof' fabrics into one garment, and did actually discuss this with the owner when I visited the shop about 4 years ago.
So at last I was able to order this Ventile / Pile Suilven jacket in January 2020.
OK, so it weighs over a kilo, so significantly heavier than a Buffalo pile/pertex jacket, but not any heavier than my Montane pile/pertex jacket, nor for that matter a double ventile jacket. Unlike the Montane extreme, that extra weight should amount to extra weatherproofing compared to a Buffalo.
After 2 hours in torrential Lake District rain I've just taken it off to write this review. I've ran my hands around inside the hood, shoulders, elbows and back and can feel no moisture whatsoever in the pile. My cotton T shirt I was wearing underneath is similarly dry. The only damp areas are cuffs and hood facings which have been splashed directly by the rain. There's only one place where I can access single layer Ventile directly which is the chest pocket. The inside of that is also dry to touch, and so was my phone inside it.
I've also noticed that the Ventile holds on to the DWR longer than a synthetic garment, both in terms of how many minutes of rain before it wets out, and how many months before it wears off. I guess thick dense cotton absorbs DWR better than thin nylon.
This is certainly the best 'big winter jacket' I've ever owned.
